You’re moving to a new home! It’s a very exciting time for your entire family, but it can also be an absolute headache or nightmare if you don’t take a bit of time to stay organized throughout the entire process, especially if you’ve hired a moving company in Ottawa. Here are some useful tips and necessary supplies that can make your move more fun.

Staying Organized in a Sea of Boxes and Belongings

When everything was in its place you did not realize you had so much stuff. But now that you are taking it off the shelf and trying to get it into boxes you realize just how much needs to be done. Whether you do it yourself or hire a moving company in Ottawa such as Gerry’s Moving, the chances of temporarily misplacing something during a move is almost 100%. However, with some simple organizational tips you can drastically reduce the chances of misplacing a favorite stuffed animal or book.

* Pack one room at a time. This simple tip can prevent the frantic digging through boxes looking for one single item when you’re at your new home. Bathroom items should go in a box clearly labeled “bathroom”, things from your bedroom should go on a box labeled “bedroom”, and so on. This way, when you need to find the elusive bar of soap you have a good chance of finding it in the box labeled “bathroom”.

* Keep track of electrical cords. All sorts of electronics in our home have detachable power cords to make it easier to store them when not in use. This also means it’s more stuff to keep track of or ultimately misplace. The best way to round up all of your cords is to place them in a bag with labels on each one so you know where it belongs.

Don’t Forget these Handy Packing Supplies

Did you know that companies like Gerry’s Moving can pack everything for you? It can definitely save a lot of time and hassle for you, but if you are the do-it-yourself type of person, be sure you have these packing supplies on hand to make it go quicker. Packing paper and bubble wrap are both necessary for protecting valuables and fragile items such as wine glasses and fine China. Stretch wrap is also common for large items such as furniture and mattresses. It keeps dust and moisture off of that item during the move. Labels, labels, and more labels! If you don’t have labels at least have a marker so you can write the contents of every box on the exterior to make unpacking a lot easier.
